STUDENTS

The Guidance Counseling Office provides counseling and support programs for all members of the university community—including students, faculty, staff, and administrators—who may be experiencing any form of distress that could affect their well-being or behavior within or outside the University.

GCO SERVICES TO STUDENTS

Counseling

This is the core of the Guidance and Counseling Office where helping and professional relationship between the client and guidance counselor/associate and client exists. Its ultimate goal is to help the student manage his/her concerns and cope with the pressing condition affecting the three domains such as academics, personal/social and career development.

The counseling service may extend to:

A. Individual Counseling

- Can be in the form of routine interview, referral, walk-in and exit interview

B. Group Counseling

- Two or more clients, they can be referred to through homeroom guidance and walk-in

C. Follow-up Counseling

- Conduct of another session on the client's progress

D. Case Conferences

- Teacher-counselor

- Parent-counselor

Goal of counseling:

- To provide the students with information on matters important to their adjustment and success

- To assist students in empowering themselves by providing alternatives, clarification and leads for the resolution of their conflicts and worries

- To provide assistance to students with special cases such as the emotionally or psychologically disturbed

Referral

Students requiring special attention are directed to the Guidance and Counseling Office after consultation between guidance counselor/associate and parents, teachers and/or administrators. Cases that need clinical attention are referred to psychologists, psychiatrists and /or other medical professionals.

The referral system enhances the effectivity of the counseling services. Teachers or faculty members, who are in a relatively better position to observe the students, extend assistance when they do encounter any student who needs special attention

This can be done through:

A. Internal
Faculty members and non-teaching personnel may refer a student in need of counseling.

B. External
The Guidance Counselor may refer a student to psychiatrist or psychologist for further assessment.

A. Routine Interview

A routine interview with students is conducted at the beginning of the school year to update and evaluate their current level of wellness and adjustment in school. Information about educational and familial background, psychological test results, and academic performance are updated to monitor the students' progress. It can be done either on one on one or group interview. The data gathered are recorded and kept in his/her cumulative folder.

B. Exit Interview

This is being conducted to graduating and transferring students to talk about their experiences, growth in the campus, career and future plans. As part of their clearance requirement, students must undergo this process.

Individual Inventory

This encompasses filling out and updating of cumulative record and the gathering of individual background or data such as personal, family, educational, career, social, health, socio-economic, extra-curricular.

Goal of individual inventory:

to assess and understand student's personality make-up through the background data they provide
to gather pertinent information about the student that could be used to maximize the service being offered to him
to assist teachers/advisers as well as parents in understanding the student better

Information

This service is a means to reach out to students and other clients or members of the community through dissemination of information that would benefit them. Dissemination of information is done through bulletin boards, Facebook page, email blast, Student Manual/Handbook and other means to reach out to students. This service also extends to parents, alumni, teachers, administrators, other school personnel and the outside community.

It also includes room-to-room campaign, homeroom guidance class, symposia, seminars, conferences and orientation with the use of tri-media system.

Goal of information service:
to provide students with information that is necessary for a successful scholastic performance
to provide students with information that can help them prepare for career-pathing
to provide information on achieving a wholesome personality with proper values and right attitude

Career and Placement

This is a comprehensive, developmental program designed to assist students in making and implementing informed educational and occupational choices. A career guidance and counseling program develops an individual's competencies in self-knowledge, educational and occupational exploration, and career planning.

Testing

This covers test selection; organization of testing calendar; administration, scoring and interpretation of tests; dissemination/communication of results; construction of local norms; and follow-up counseling utilizing test results.

Psychological Testing Program

All graduating students are provided with testing on personality test and IQ test for freshmen and other grade/year level.

Goal of testing service:

help students build a realistic picture of themselves through an estimate of his mental ability, interest, aptitude, personality, attitude, habits and achievement
to gain accurate information on the student's strengths and weaknesses
to provide basis for research and information on other needs of the student

Follow up

Feedback pertaining to the strengths and weaknesses of the Guidance and Counseling Program is solicited from those who graduated. The information is used by the administration as a tool in program planning. A follow-up is also conducted for those who availed the office's services to keep track on their status and the efficiency of the GCO programs.

This takes the form of counseling, survey, research, evaluation, alumni meetings and homecoming.

Consultation

Students may visit the guidance counselor/associate should they have concern or inquiries about their academic, personal/social and career direction which do not need counseling.


Faculty members, administrators, staff and/or parents may ask the expertise of the guidance counselor/associate should they want to be clarified or equipped with ways on how they handle the students of children's behavior and issues.

Research and Evaluation

The guidance counselors/associates and the whole department conduct studies to better understand any issues and phenomena affecting their clients using empirical data. It is undertaken regularly as to establish a progressive guidance program as well as to enable the GCO to continually render a relatively better service to the students. The office deliberates what subject areas of the Guidance Program and students' needs have to be researched on.


The evaluation of the Guidance Program involves comprehensive appraisal and its impact on the various student services. This is to see if the current program still answers the needs of the clients to enrich it.


Goal of research and evaluation service:

To assist in curricular planning and development through results of research
To conduct significant assessment of the guidance services by knowing its strengths and weaknesses
To disseminate results of studies and effectively implement the recommendations to improve instructions and other services being rendered to students
To assist graduates/alumni as well as to students who are still in school and those who are school leavers
To secure information about the experiences of graduates/former students which may be of value to the students and to the whole school especially its academic program

WELLNESS PROGRAM: My Self- Empower towards Life Fulfillment (My S.E.L.F)

This Wellness Program aims to assist college students learn competencies for life skills. Through mastery of these basic life skills, they would be able to improve quality of their life and therefore find meaning or purpose of being.

The faculty members may visit the Guidance and Counseling Office for counseling and consultation. Likewise, this covers research, evaluation, training, and enrichment seminars for their personal and professional growth.
